Virgin's Super-Fast Fibre Optic - Yeh, if you don't use it!

Posted on 12 Feb 2009 by Stuart

It's common knowledge that Virgin Media "throttle" your Internet connection if you go over their chosen limits - but now they're tightening their belts!

The Register today reports that Virgin Media are rolling out trials to hit those that use their broadband in the way it was advertised by Virgin Media by limiting how much they can download at any given time. Rather than capping the bandwidth at a set amount - so that once you've used your allocation, you are left without any Internet access at all - Virgin Media throttle their customers.

In laymens terms, if you are on a 20MB connection, and you're being throttled, you can expect to lose up to 75% of your Internet speed - leaving you with a measly 5MB connection to the Internet for the duration of your throttle.

Easy PC Scotland feel these policies are actually fair - but the way they implement them are not. Virgin Media's advert of "The Mother of all Broadband" and "Super Super Super Fast Broadband" are in fact a complete load of nonsense.
