Lord Carter proposes 50p tax on all landlines for Broadband
Posted on 16 Jun 2009 by Stuart
A 50p tax on every landline telephone to cover the costs of future Broadband integration in the United Kingdom.
Lord Carter today told the BBC News: "We would put a small supplement on landlines ... what we're proposing today is an idea which would give us some funding to work with the [Broadband] market."
The funding is said to going to finance fibre optic Broadband which should provide speeds of up to 50MB in certain areas, with a minimum of 2MB.
Communications minister Stephen Carter said that some £200m of funding would be spent to extend coverage to the 15% of UK homes which do not receive broadband at 2Mbps.
The government pledged to complete this by 2012, but we're not going to hold our breath.
