Casino company breaches Data Protection Act

Posted on 30 Jul 2009 by Stuart

Following the theft of an unencrypted laptop containing personal data, a casino company is being made to put its cards on the table by the Information Commissioner.

London Clubs International Limited (LCI), which currently operates 11 casinos throughout the United Kingdom, is being forced to improve its data security with immediate effect following the theft of an unencrypted laptop containing the data of approximately 26,000 customers.

Roy Ramm, on behalf of LCI, has signed an Undertaking after the Information Commissioner's Office found LCI in breach of the Data Protection Act. LCI will now have to ensure all portable device, including laptops, that are used to store perosnal information, are encrypted.

Stuart Gilbertson, Managing Director at Easy PC Scotland said:

"It is becoming apparant that only a few businesses really consider the consequences of not ensuring their systems are encrypted. Not only is it a legal requirement under the Data Protection Act to ensure that devices that are used to store personal informationare encrypted, it also makes solid business sense.

A laptop with a list of your clients on it would be invaluable to your competitors. If that laptop or any other device got into their hands, would your business survive?

We are seeing more and more businesses coming to us, realising the potentially cripling effects losing data to a competitor could have on their business. For a small fee, they can be assured that this horrible outcome can be averted. Not to mention avoiding expensive fines from the Information Commissioner's Office!"

Easy PC Scotland are currently running a special deal on encryption services and are offering a massive 50% discount to all businesses who want to ensure their data stays secure. Click here for more information, or call 0131 516 8456.
