Doctor breaches Data Protection Act

Posted on 14 Aug 2009 by Stuart

A doctor has been found by the Information Commissioners Office to be in breach of the Data Proection Act after a server was found in the car park by an employee of a nearby business. The server contained sensitive personal information of the practice's patients and some personal data of its employees.

The doctor has agreed to ensure that the decommissioning process regarding the practice's servers has been completed successfully to maintain the security of personal information. He also undertook to ensure that any other equipment holding personal information will be decommissioned appropriately.

The Information Commissioner's Office forced the doctor to sign an undertaking to assure the ICO that sensitive personal information will be kept securely in future.

Sally-anne Poole, Head of Enforement and Investigations at the ICO, said: "It is vital that sensitive personal information, such as patient information, is handled securely. This is an important principle of the Data Protection Act."

Stuart Gilbertson, Managing Director of Easy PC Scotland, said: "More and more emminent people and businesses are unknowingly operating illegally and in breach of the Data Protection Act. Getting a professional IT company in for one or two days to set up a secure data management system can prevent their name being potentially tarnished by bad publicity.

More businesses are now coming forward and admitting to not having proper security methods in place, and we welcome this with open arms. The more businesses we can help with their data security, the better."
